Email Filtering and Security Checks

Email Filtering and Security Checks

Whenever an email is sent to or received from a Seton Hall University address, our email servers perform an internal security check to detect and block potentially malicious or harmful content.

If an issue is detected, the message will be held, and an alert will be sent notifying the sender that the email was flagged as a potential threat.

To prevent your email from being blocked, avoid the following common triggers:

Missing Subject Line

  • All email messages sent to or from Seton Hall email addresses must include text in the Subject line.

Email Size Exceeds 35MB

  • Emails, including attachments, must not exceed 35MB in total size.

  • If sending large files:

    • Break them into smaller emails (e.g., instead of one 40MB email, send four 10MB emails).

    • Upload files to Microsoft OneDrive and share a link with recipients.

Too Many Recipients (Especially in BCC)

  • Emails should not include hundreds of recipients in a single message.

  • If emailing multiple recipients, send separate, smaller emails.

    • For example, instead of one email to 500 recipients, send ten emails to 50 recipients each.

Restricted File Attachments

  • To protect against malware, emails must not contain the following file types:

    • .zip, .gzip → Compressed files

    • .ocx → Windows ActiveX Control files

    • .sys → Windows system files

    • .rdp → Remote desktop access files

    • .svg → Scalable Vector Graphics files
