Submit an Assignment from Microsoft Office 365 in Canvas

If your course supports Microsoft Office 365 integration, you can upload files directly from your OneDrive as assignment submissions in Canvas. This guide walks you through the steps and outlines important notes about the process.

Supported File Types

Canvas accepts the following file types from Microsoft Office 365:

  • Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx)

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx)

  • Microsoft Excel (.xls/.xlsx)

  • PDF (.pdf)

Notes:

  • Files submitted through Office 365 are stored in your Canvas user files submissions folder.

  • If the Office 365 tab is not visible during assignment submission, your institution has not enabled this feature.

  • You must authorize Canvas to access your OneDrive account.

  • Only one file can be submitted per assignment via Office 365.

  • Changes made to the original OneDrive file after submission will not update in Canvas.

  • If enabled, Canvas may show a celebration animation upon on-time submission. This can be turned off in your User Settings.

  • If your assignment page looks different, it may be using Assignment Enhancements. Click here to learn more.
