SCRIB3D Advanced 3D Pen
What is SCRIB3D Advanced 3D Pen?
The SCRIB3D Advanced 3D Pen allows users to draw and build in three dimensions—freehand and in real time. Rather than printing objects layer by layer like a traditional 3D printer, the pen lets users create, sketch, and prototype directly in the air or on a surface, turning ideas into physical forms instantly.
A 3D pen works like a handheld version of a 3D printer, melting plastic filament and extruding it through a heated nozzle that quickly hardens as it cools. Designed with comfort, control, and creativity in mind, the SCRIB3D Advanced Pen features adjustable temperature and speed settings, a clear LCD display, and an ergonomic, soft-touch design. It is commonly used for freehand 3D drawing, rapid prototyping, model building, plastic repairs or modifications, and creative art, design, and STEAM projects—making it accessible for beginners while still supporting advanced creative work.
About 3D Pens at Seton Hall
The SCRIB3D Advanced 3D Pen is available in the Seton Hall University Innovation Hub to support hands-on learning, creativity, and experimentation. It is often used alongside other maker tools such as 3D printers and laser engravers to complement prototyping and design workflows.
How It Works
Using the SCRIB3D Advanced 3D Pen is straightforward and designed for first-time users. Follow the steps below to begin creating right away.
Plug In the Pen
Connect the power adapter securely to the back of the pen and plug it into a power outlet. The pen will power on automatically.Select Your Filament
Insert a strand of PLA or ABS filament into the back of the pen. Make sure the filament is straight so it feeds smoothly into the pen.Allow the Pen to Warm Up
Once powered on, the pen will begin heating. The red indicator light will turn on during warm-up, which typically takes 2–3 minutes. The pen is ready when the light changes and the temperature stabilizes.Load the Filament
Double-click the forward button to feed the filament into the pen. Continue until melted plastic begins to flow from the nozzle, indicating the filament is fully loaded.Start Drawing
Press the forward button once to begin extruding plastic and start drawing. Guide the pen slowly and steadily to create lines, shapes, or layers. Press the button again to stop extrusion.Finish & Retract
When finished, press and hold the reverse button to retract the filament from the pen. This helps prevent clogs and prepares the pen for the next user.
Campus Use & Educational Benefits
The SCRIB3D Advanced 3D Pen supports interdisciplinary learning across campus by allowing users to quickly turn ideas into physical forms through hands-on creation. Its low barrier to entry makes it especially useful for brainstorming, prototyping, and creative exploration without the need for complex software or equipment.
Academic & Instructional Use
Art & Design
Students can create free-form sculptures, custom lettering, surface embellishments, and wearable art pieces. The pen is ideal for experimenting with form, texture, and line quality, as well as adding detail to existing projects.Engineering & Architecture
The 3D pen supports rapid prototyping by allowing users to sketch structural elements, reinforce joints, or visualize spatial relationships in physical models. It can also be used to repair or modify prototypes created with other fabrication tools.STEM & Science
In science and STEM courses, the pen can be used to create molecular models, geometric forms, simple machines, and spatial representations that help students visualize complex concepts.Sustainability & Repair
The SCRIB3D pen encourages reuse and repair by allowing users to fix cracked plastic parts, reinforce weak areas, or modify existing objects—supporting sustainable making practices.
Skill Development
Spatial Reasoning & Design Thinking
Drawing in three dimensions helps students understand scale, proportion, and structure while translating ideas from imagination to physical form.
Creativity & Hands-On Problem Solving
The pen promotes experimentation and creative risk-taking as users test ideas, adjust designs, and solve problems in real time.
Rapid Prototyping & Iteration
Because designs can be created and modified instantly, students can quickly iterate on ideas without long setup or production times.
Collaboration & Experimentation
The approachable nature of the tool makes it ideal for group work, collaborative challenges, and open lab activities that encourage shared learning and exploration.
