Glowforge Pro HD Laser Engraver
What is the Glowforge Pro HD Laser Engraver?
The Glowforge Pro HD Laser Engraver makes it easy to turn digital designs into beautifully engraved or precisely cut physical objects. Available in the Seton Hall University Innovation Hub, Glowforge uses a focused beam of light (a laser) to cut and engrave materials such as wood, leather, acrylic, paper, and more—without using blades or physical tools.
Laser engraving works by using a concentrated beam of light to etch designs into a material or cut shapes out of it. The laser never touches the material; instead, it vaporizes or burns away small areas with high precision. Designed to be beginner-friendly, Glowforge allows users to upload a design, position it visually using a built-in camera, and produce professional-quality results with minimal setup. This makes it ideal for creative projects, academic work, prototyping, custom signage, plaques, artwork, and architectural or academic models.
About Laser Engraving at Seton Hall
The Glowforge Pro HD is available in the Seton Hall University Innovation Hub to support hands-on learning, creativity, and interdisciplinary projects. The system is designed so that users can focus on design and experimentation while the machine handles precision and alignment.
Who Can Use the Glowforge?
Glowforge access is available to Seton Hall University students, faculty, and staff through the Innovation Hub under the direct supervision of professional staff.
How It Works
Using the Glowforge Pro HD Laser Engraver follows a clear, visual workflow that makes it easy for beginners to get professional-quality results.
Choose or Create a Design
Begin by uploading an image or vector file, or by creating a custom design in graphic design software. Designs may include text, shapes, or images and should be sized correctly to fit the material you plan to engrave or cut.Place Your Material
Lay the approved material flat inside the Glowforge bed, ensuring it is properly aligned and within the maximum thickness allowed. Correct placement helps ensure accurate cutting or engraving and safe operation.Position the Design
Use the live camera preview to view the actual material inside the machine directly on your screen. Drag, resize, or rotate the design until it is positioned exactly where you want it before starting the job.Select Engrave or Cut Settings
Choose the appropriate settings based on the material type and whether you are engraving or cutting. Glowforge’s preset material options help beginners select the correct power, speed, and focus for clean, consistent results.Start the Job
Press print and monitor as the laser precisely engraves or cuts your design according to the selected settings. The enclosed system allows you to safely observe the process while the job runs.Remove the Finished Piece
Once the job is complete, carefully remove the finished piece from the bed. Light cleanup, such as removing residue or loose material, may be needed before the item is ready for use or assembly.
Supported Materials
The Glowforge Pro HD Laser Engraver supports a wide variety of materials; however, only Seton Hall University–approved materials purchased through the University Marketplace portal may be used in the Innovation Hub. This ensures safe operation, consistent results, and proper ventilation.
Approved materials include:
Wood
Plywood, hardwoods, and veneers specifically rated for laser engraving and cutting.Acrylic
Clear, colored, and mirrored acrylic sheets approved for laser use.Leather & Fabric
Natural leather and select fabrics that are laser-safe and approved by the Innovation Hub.Paper & Cardboard
Paper, cardstock, and cardboard suitable for engraving or light cutting.
Materials not purchased through the Seton Hall Marketplace or not explicitly approved may not be used in the Glowforge.
Campus Use & Educational Benefits
The Glowforge Pro HD Laser Engraver supports learning and creativity across disciplines by allowing users to transform digital designs into precise, physical objects. By combining design, technology, and hands-on making, Glowforge helps bridge the gap between conceptual ideas and tangible outcomes.
