The University uses ALERTUS as part of the Pirate Alert emergency notification system. ALERTUS will allow emergency messages to be sent to computers and immediately viewed by users. ALERTUS will be utilized to alert the SHU community of life threatening emergencies. ALERTUS will not be used for non-emergency messaging such as snow closures, transportation system interruptions, or general broadcast messages.

The Department of Information Technology deploys the ALERTUS software to all SHU issued computers connected to the SHU domain. Members of the University community that use a personally owned device or one that is not connected to the SHU domain will need to install the ALERTUS application on that device.

To install ALERTUS on a personally owned Windows device or one that is not connected to the SHU domain:

  1. Download the install file to your Windows machine.

  2. Go to your download folder and double click on the "Alertus_Desktop_Windows_V.4.1.exe" file that was saved to your machine.

  3. A security popup window will appear, asking if you would like to allow this app to make changes to your device, click yes.

To install ALERTUS on a personally owned MacOS device or one that is not connected to the SHU domain:

  1. Download the install file to your MAC machine.

  2. Go to the finder and locate the download folder and double click on the "Alertus_Desktop_MAC_OSX_2.10.01.1727.dmg" file that was saved to your machine.

  3. This will then attach an installer drive to your machine called "Popup". Within the "Popup" installer drive, double click on the "Popup.pkg" file to launch the setup wizard.

  4. When the installation wizard appears follow the prompts and proceed with the installation using the default settings.

  5. During the installation when prompted to input a username/password use the local computer username and password; not your network username/password.

  6. When the installation is completed click the "Close" or "Finish" button to close the installer.
