Install or Activate MS Office 365 Software Suite

Seton Hall University’s partnership with Microsoft provides the community with free access the full Microsoft 365 software suite. This software can be installed on both personal and SHU-issued devices.

The Microsoft 365 software suite includes:

  • Word

  • Excel

  • PowerPoint

  • Outlook (client software)

  • OneNote

  • Teams

  • Access

  • Publisher

To access Microsoft 365 apps, you must first install then activate the software on your device(s).

  1. Log into PirateNet using your eight-character username and network password.

  2. On your PirateNet Dashboard, search for and select the Microsoft Office 365 Mail app to access your mailbox.

  3. Click the waffle menu located in the upper left corner. Then, click on the Microsoft 365 icon.

  4. You will be directed to your Microsoft 365 portal. Click the Install and More dropdown menu located in the top right corner. Then, click Install Microsoft 365 apps.

  5. On the Apps & Devices tile, select Install Office.

  6. Locate the OfficeSetup.exe (or similar name) installer that was downloaded and launch it.

  7. A window may appear asking you, "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" If so, select Yes.

     

  8. The software package will then download and install MS Office 365 software suite onto your device.
    Based upon your connection speed and amount to install, this process may take a little while.

  1. Launch any of the newly installed Microsoft 365 software suite programs. For example, open Microsoft Word.

  2. On the Accept the license agreement screen, select the Accept button.

     

  3. On the Sign in to activate Office screen, select the Sign in button.

     

  4. On the Activate Office screen, enter your <username>@shu.edu and click Next. For example, if your name is Mary Smith and your username is smithmar, you would enter “smithmar@shu.edu.”

     

  5. On the We need a little more help screen, select Work or school account.

     

  6. When prompted, log in with your PirateNet credentials.

  7. If the Stay signed in to all your apps window appears, you must:
    A. Remove the checkmark (uncheck) the Allow my organization to manage my device checkbox.
    B. Select No, sign in to this app only option.
    These steps are especially important if you are installing Microsoft 365 software suite onto a personal, non-SHU issued device.

Please note: Activation of Microsoft 365 software suite is done via your SHU-issued mailbox.

  • You will be prompted periodically to re-activate the software.

  • When you graduate, if you were to leave the university or end your employment with SHU your mailbox will be disabled. As such you would no longer be able to re-activate the software.
