MS Windows 10/11 BitLocker Recovery

As part our ongoing security commitment all newer model SHU-issued laptops would be pre-set with BitLocker hard drive encryption enabled.

BitLocker would stop the data stored on your computer from being viewed on another device to prevent un-authorized access to your files.

How to recover your BitLocker key, if prompted:

Please note:

  • This process must be performed from another device, other than the SHU laptop for BitLocker recovery.

  • You must have an active SHU-issued Microsoft account to follow below steps.

  1. Go to http://www.shu.edu homepage and select link to "PirateNet" in upper right-hand corner.

  2. Enter your eight-character username and network password to log into account.

  3. From the "PirateNet Dashboard" (aka "Okta"), select button for "Microsoft Office 365 Mail"
    (to access your mailbox).

  4. In upper right-hand corner of your mailbox, select your "Avatar" icon and choose "View account"

    Your "Avatar" icon will typically be your initials or the custom photo you uploaded that appears when your relay a message.

  5. On the left-hand pane, select "Devices" to see a list of all of the devices you have/had used.

  6. Locate the device you wish to recover the BitLocker key for and select "down arrow" to expand it.
    Select the "View BitLocker Keys" button.

  7. In the "slide out" menu (on right) it will show a "Key ID" that will match with what you are seeing on BitLocker recovery key screen.
    If “Key ID” displayed on this screen does not match with “Recovery Key ID” on laptop select differing device until they do match up.
    Select "Show recovery key" to view the recovery key.

  8. The recovery key displayed can then be used on laptop to access system.
    Please note:
    - The key can be lengthy and must be entered exactly as shown.
    - You must enter the key in it's entirely.
