Page Views and Participations

A page view occurs when a user opens a page in a course, providing insight into how course resources are accessed. However, because page view data is based on server requests, it should be used as an approximation of activity rather than an absolute measure. This data is most useful for identifying whether activity occurred and for comparing trends across students or over time.

Participation in Canvas includes specific actions where a user actively engages with course content. The following student actions generate course participation analytics:

  • Announcements: Posts a comment on an announcement

  • Assignments: Submits an assignment

  • Collaborations: Opens a collaboration to view/edit a document

  • Conferences: Joins a web conference

  • Discussions: Posts a comment in a discussion

  • Pages: Creates a page

  • Quizzes: Starts or submits a quiz
