Encrypt Emails

When you need to protect the privacy of an email message, encrypt it. Encrypting an email message in Outlook means it's converted from readable plain text into scrambled cipher text. Only the recipient who has the private key that matches the public key used to encrypt the message can decipher the message for reading. Any recipient without the corresponding private key, however, sees indecipherable text.

The Label dropdown menu (located on the right side of the subject line field) and the Sensitivity dropdown menu in the Outlook toolbar now provide convenient options for email encryption.

  • Email Encrypt: Encrypts the message content, ensuring that only the intended recipient can access it. This prevents unauthorized access while the email is in transit.

  • Highly Confidential Label: Restricts recipients from printing, saving, forwarding, or extracting content from the email. However, these restrictions apply only to internal Seton Hall mailboxes and will not prevent actions when the email is sent to external recipients.
