MATLAB - MathWorks

MATLAB is a programming and numerical computing platform from MathWorks that is widely used by engineers, scientists, researchers, and students for data analysis, algorithm development, modeling, and simulation.

Request a MATLAB License

To request a new MATLAB license or renew an existing license, complete the Software Request Form.

You will need to provide:

  • Username

  • Computer Serial Number

  • Course ID

  • Faculty Member’s Name

After your request is processed, you will receive an email containing instructions for creating a MathWorks account and installing MATLAB.


Create a MathWorks Account

  1. Go to the MathWorks account creation page.

  2. Enter your Seton Hall email address:

    • firstname.lastname@shu.edu

    • firstname.lastname@student.shu.edu

  3. Select Next.

  4. Complete the CAPTCHA verification if prompted.

  5. Create and confirm a password for your MathWorks account.

    • Must be 8 to 50 characters long

    • Must include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers

    • This password is separate from your Seton Hall network password

  6. Check your email for a verification code from MathWorks and enter it when prompted.

  7. Accept the Online Service Agreement and select Next.

  8. Complete your profile information:

    • First Name

    • Last Name

    • Location

    • What best describes you? Teacher/Research in Academia

    • Department and Role: Select the appropriate options

  9. Select:

    • Location of School/University: United States

    • State/Province: New Jersey

    • School/University: Seton Hall University

  10. Select Next to complete account creation.


Acquire the MATLAB Installer

  1. Sign in to your MathWorks account.

  2. Verify that your MATLAB license has been assigned. You should see MATLAB (Individual) listed under your licenses.

  3. Under License Actions, select the down-arrow menu next to MATLAB (Individual).

  4. Download the installer for your operating system:

    • Windows

    • macOS

    • Linux


Install MATLAB

  • Your computer needs at least 7 GB of free space to install MATLAB.

  • These instructions were tested with MATLAB version R2025a.

Launch the Installer

  1. Open the email from MathWorks confirming your software allocation.

  2. Select the installation link and sign in to your MathWorks account.

  3. Under License Actions, download the installer for your operating system.

    • Windows: The installer extracts and launches automatically.

    • macOS

      • Extract the downloaded .zip file.

      • Open the .dmg file.

      • Run the MATLAB installer.

    • Linux

      • Extract the downloaded .zip file.

      • Run the installer manually.

      • Refer to the included README file for platform-specific instructions.

Complete the Installation

  1. Enter the email address and password associated with your MathWorks account.

  2. Accept the License Agreement and select Next.

  3. Follow the prompts using the recommended settings below:

Select Add shortcut to desktop and select Next

Review the settings and select Next

  1. The installer will download and install MATLAB automatically.

  2. When the installation is complete, select Close.


Launch MATLAB

After installation is complete, you can launch MATLAB from:

  • The desktop shortcut (if selected during installation)

  • The Start menu (Windows)

  • The Applications folder (macOS)


MATLAB License Renewal

MATLAB licenses are renewed annually by Seton Hall University.

As the license expiration date approaches, you may see a notification indicating that your license will expire soon. No action is required. You may dismiss the notification.

After the University renews the license, one of the following may occur:

Current Versions of MATLAB

When you launch MATLAB, you may receive a one-time notification indicating that the license has been renewed. Simply dismiss the notification and continue using MATLAB.

Older Versions of MATLAB

When you launch MATLAB, you may receive a message prompting you to renew your license.

  1. Select the renewal link or button provided in the notification.

  2. MATLAB will update the license automatically.

  3. Continue using MATLAB normally.
