Create Assignments in Canvas

Canvas Assignments streamlines the way that student work is collected. Instructors can create a Canvas Assignment to collect all students' work, and it provides students with detailed instructions for each assignment, due dates, template files for students to use when applicable, and rubrics to help students understand what is expected to achieve full credit for their work.

Creating the Assignment

  1. Click on Assignments from the course navigation menu.

     

  2. Click +Assignment in the top-right corner. 

     

  3. Name your assignment under the Assignment Name field. Then, enter a description or assignment details in the rich content editor below. To attach files, you can select the file from the Documents icon. 

Assignment Settings

Below the rich content editor are assignment settings that you can selected to fit your assignment's specific needs and configuration. 

  • Points - Set the number of points the assignment is worth. If ungraded, enter "0." 

  • Assignment Group - Select an assignment group if any have been created.

  • Display Grade As - Select the type of grade that shows up in the gradebook and on the students' view. 

    • Percentage 

    • Complete/Incomplete 

    • Points 

    • Letter Grade (Uses the grading scheme) 

    • GPA Scale (Uses the grading scheme) 

    • Not Graded (If the assignment has no submission AND is ungraded) 

  • Do not count this assignment towards the final grade - Check off this option if the assignment has a submission, but should not be counted towards the course's final grade. 

  • Submission Type and Plagiarism Review - Set the submission type. If an online file is selected, you can also use the plagiarism review tool Turnitin

    • No Submission 

    • Online 

    • On Paper 

    • Text Entry 

    • Website URL 

    • Media Recording 

    • File Uploads 

    • External Tool 

  • Group Assignment - Select to designate the assignment as a group assignment. 

  • Peer Reviews - Select to have students review their peers' work to provide feedback. 

  • Assign - Select which and when students will see the assignment and set the due date. 

  • Click "Save" or "Save & Publish" when finished.
